HEMP FARMING AND SOUTH CAROLINA AGRICULTURE

Attention South Carolina farmers, at the end the good news hit you as the Governor of South Carolina; Nikki Haley signed the bill which authorizes the production and growth of industrial hemp.  Studies reveal that the market for hemp alone is nearly $500 million every year with nearly 25,000 several uses from this wonderful crop ranging from bio-fuel, food, plastics and even cosmetics and US is ranked as the biggest importer of hemp.  Though hemp is now legal in South Carolina, then why can’t you think of hemp farming that can boost up your income from its cultivation?

How simple is the farming of hemp?
Victory of most of the growers across South Carolina as the “hemp amendment” led to the production of this amazing plant offering excellent economic opportunity.  Hemp, best suited for the South eastern parts where the climate is usually humid and hot makes South Carolina one of the best locations for its cultivation.  A relatively effortless process which requires a seed bed as the plants are planted with existing equipments as flourished in these regions are the cultivation of several other crops.   In some cases, top of the plants are harvested and the seeds are stored same like any other oil seeds and in certain other cases, the stalk has to be harvested where a sickle bar shaped machine is used.  Later on, these stalks are dried until the leaves will get shattered once the crop is baled which is protected from the present climatic conditions.
Studies revealed that, though the market for hemp is small, but there are chances where the South Carolina agriculture industry will flourish in coarse of time and the farmers can earn profit even from the seeds.  They must be ready even to consider several alternatives that will end-up in a profitable business and at the same time they have to determine the risks that are involved like production and even the fluctuation that they experience when it come to its yields.  Removing the definition of industrial from the present definition of hemp, the bill that was introduced says that the seeds and fibre obtained from it can be used in several products ranging from edible seeds to paper and even in fabrics. Farm bill of 2014 also has the provision of allowing agriculture departments to cultivate or grow industrial hemp if it is registered to study the various benefits of this amazing crop as a commercial product.
